Step 1: Create The Design
1: First we are going to install the font that we are going to use in our design. In order to do this, you need to download the font that we are providing. After that, follow the steps that are showing on your device in order to finish the installation.
The font that we are going to use is called: Beautiful Dream and Scream Tattoo. For both of them we are going to follow the same steps.
For MacOS, the steps to install the font are:
💡Tip: You need to make sure that Design Space is closed before installing the new font, if not you have to close it and open it again in order to see the font listed on your Fonts types in Design Space.
2: In order to be able to start our Design, we are going to access our Design Space application and in there we are going to click on the + New Project Green button located on the top Right corner of our screen.
3: After we clicked in there, we are going to be able to access our Blank Canvas, in where we are going to start creating our Design:
4: We are going to start by adding a circle using shapes functionalities located on the left side vertical menu
5: We are going to change the measurements of the square to match our physical wood sign, in our case is: 11.5“ x 11.5“, in order to change that we are going to use the measurements functionalities that is located on the top horizontal bar
💡Tip: if your wood sign is rectangular, click on the lock that is showing, so you can add the different dimensions separately.
6: We are going to change the color of our circle to a darker color, to be able to distinguish our design. The circle is only a placeholder to be able to determine the dimensions of our design, but is not going to be cut. In order to change the color, go to operations functionality in the top vertical bar, and click on the color squared (gray by default) in order to choose a different color. In our case is going to be black.
7: After, that we are going to start adding the text related to our sign, in order to do this, we are going to use the Text functionality located in the left vertical menu and we are going to write the following text: “home”, we are going to use the font that we installed in the first step:
You should have something like:
8: The same way that we changed the color to our circle, we are going to change the color to the text, to WHITE.
💡Tip: Remember, that the final color that we are going to use is the one related to the vinyl in where we are going to cut our design.
9: We are going to duplicate the word home, in order to do this, we are going to click on the word, and click on the pencil icon located on the top horizontal menu bar, we are going to click on Duplicate.
After duplicating the word:
💡Tip: You can also duplicate the object by clicking on it and using the following keys on your keyboard: command/Control + D
10: Using the Text functionality one more time, we are going to write: “WEE” and we are going to change the font to Cricut Free Font: “Typewriter”
After changing the font:
💡Tip: By default the new text is going to be shown with the latest font that you used.
11: Now, we are going to write the letters: “S” and “T” using 2 different text functionalities (meaning that they need to be independently between each other).
And we are going to change the font to: “Scream Tattoo” that we installed in the first step.
After changing the font:
12: We are going to now put together the S, T and WEET to write the word SWEET . You have to click each one of the elements and drag and drop to the desired place. After doing that, you should have something like:
13: Now we are going to attach the 3 elements together so we have only 1 element with the whole word, in order to do this, selecting the 3 elements, we are going to click on the Attach button in the bottom right menu:
After Attaching the 3 elements, now you just have 1 element:
14: Now we are going to start positioning our words in the circle, to do that grab each one of the elements and positioned them into the circle in order to write the phrase: “home SWEET home”:
💡Tip: If the text / element is showing under the circle, go to Arrange functionality, located on the top horizontal bar and click on: “Bring to Front”
15: Once that we have the phrase located inside the circle, we are going to resize it taking into consideration the dimensions of our circle, in our case the measurements are going to be: W: 9.286” and H: 4.999” after resizing them, we are going to attach them all together:
After attaching them:
💡Tip: Make sure that you have a little bit of space in each side, so the design looks better.
16: Now, we are going to upload the 4 SVG with swirls that we are providing:
Click on Upload functionality, and in there follow the instructions, once that both are uploaded to Design Space, click on both of them and add them to the canvas
After adding them to the canvas:
17: Now we are going to duplicate each one of them several times because we are going to start placing them into our circle, The 2 big ones we are going to use in our design, 2 times each one of them:
And then we add the other 2:
💡Tip: The dimensions that we are using are:
- Light green: W: 1.4” H: 2.6” approx
- Aqua: W: 3.6” H: 1.15” approx.
💡Tip 2: You can rotate any image by click on it an them in one of the corners hold the click and move the mouse in the direction that you want.
18: Before adding more swirls, we are going to add 3 small circles before the second home word:
💡Tip: The dimensions that we are using are: 0.25”, 0.3” and 0.35” approx
19: We are going to start adding the small swirls, this is a free design so you can place them whenever you like! From the 2 small swirls, we placed first the biggest one, we add it 8 times:
💡Tip: For some of the swirls we are using the Flip functionality, you just need to make sure that the swirl that you want to flop is selected and then just flip it.
20: Now, we are going to add the smallest ones, we add them 10 times:
21: After we add all the swirls that we like, we are ready to change the color to white since our final design is going to be white. So we are going to go to Sync tab and in there we are going to drag and drop all the element to the White color section (except the circle)
After changing the color of the elements:
💡Tip: You can use any other color that you may like.
22: Now we are going to select all our elements (except the circle) and we are going to attach them together, this is to avoid having to create the same design manually over our physical sign and just transfer it like this.
Before attaching them:
After attaching them:
💡Tip: if you are going to use a combination of different colors, you have to attach the same colors together, and cut them separately and then transferred them into your physical sign one at the time.
23: After you are happy with the design, especially with the measurements and the amount of swirls and the colors, we are ready to save our design, Click on Save button on the Right Top side of the screen and provide a name to your design and click on Save button.
24: Since we are ready to start cutting, we are going to Hide the circle, since it is not going to be cut. In order to do this, we are going to select the circle and click on the little eye icon that is showing next to the square under the Layers section.
After hiding the square:
