Step 1.1: Create Vase
1: We are going to create a new project with a blank canvas, and the first thing is to add a Square, using the shapes functionality.
We are going to resize the square to the following dimensions: W: 11.41” and H: 5.851” and change the color to a dark red.
💡Tip: We are using an square instead a rectangle, because we need square corners and not rounded ones.
2: Now, we are going to add a second square, and we are going to resize it to the following measurements: W: 11.41” and H: 6.456” and change the color to blue.
3: We are going to select and scoreline from the shapes functionality, and we are going to change the operation to basic cut (so it is not an scoreline anymore).
4: We are going to change the dimension to: H: 4.65”
5: We are going to duplicate the line 17 times, you can select the scoreline and inside the Edit menu, click on Duplicate 17 times, you are going to have 18 lines.
💡Tip: You can also, duplicate an element by selecting the element and in your keyboard using the following keys: Command / Ctrl + D
6: Now you are going to separate each line between each other by 0.62”, how we are going to do this, well we are going to use another line and add the height as 0.62 and then we are going to rotate it to 270 degrees, we need 19 of this lines. Something like:
After you have all of them, you can remove the horizontal lines and you are going to select all the vertical lines and using the Align functionality you are going to choose Center Vertically:
Once they are all centered, you are going to attach them all together:
After you attached them you should have something like:
7: In our blue rectangle (the second rectangle that we added) we are going to place 3 lines that are going to guide us with the following dimensions:
Taking this into consideration we are going to place the vertical lines that we attached inside those 3 limits, something like:
After we place it, we are going to remove/delete the guidelines and you should have something like:
And now, we are going to select all our vertical lines and our rectangle and we are going to attach them all together.
8: We are going to add 2 more rectangles with the following dimensions:
9: At this point you should have the following elements:
10: Using the upload functionality, we are going to upload the following images:
- Vase_bottom
- Bow_1
- Bow_2
💡Tip: You have to upload one file / image at the time, but you can add all of them together to the canvas.
11: Now we are going to resize each one of the images that we just added.
- Vase Bottom: W: 4.585” and H: 4.589” and we are going to duplicate the bottom image.
- Bow_1: W: 1.876” and H: 1.513” and we are going to duplicate the image.
- Bow_2: W: 5.311” and H: 1.584”
💡Tip: To add the H and W in the Size section independently , you need to first click on the lock, so it’s unlocked and then you can proceed adding the different measurements.
💡IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you are going to use a bigger Floral Foam Hemisphere, you need to adjust the measurement of your design.
If your diameter is larger or smaller than the one that we are using, enlarge or reduce the design until the inner circle of each of the blue circular pieces (the section without the tabs) is about the same size as your foam hemisphere’s base. Make sure to select everything when resizing and keep the lock icon closed to maintain the proportions.
12: At this point you should have the following elements:
13: We are going to save our Vase, since all the VASE designs are READY!
Step 1.2: Create The Flowers
💡Tip: You can use the same canvas as your base, or create a new project.
1: We are going to upload all the following images:
- Carnation.svg
- Dahlia.svg
- Gardenia.svg
- Leaves.svg
- Small_Daisy.svg
All the flowers should already have the measurement that fits our design, so there is no need to resize them, unless you use a bigger or smaller Floral Foam Hemisphere.
You can change the colors in your Design based on the papers that you are going to use, or you can just use the paper of the color and there is no need to change it on the design.
2: We are going to ensure the measurements are the ones that we want/need and also which colors we are going to use as a reference.
- Leaves: W: 3” and H: 3.02”
- We are going to use 5 pairs of leaves all with the same size and color (5 of each type)
- Carnations: W: 7.5” and H: 9.02”
- We are going to use 4 carnations in the following colors: pink, orange, light blue and blue
- Daisies: W: 3.5” and H: 3.1”
- We are going to use 5 and all in the same color, in our case a very light pink
💡Tip: Remember that the size that we are arranging the flowers are based on the hemisphere, also you can add more or less flowers, different sizes or other flowers that you like.
- Dahlia: W: 4.66” and H: 3”
- We are going to use 6 in the following colors: 2 yellow (using two shades of yellow), 2 blue (using two shades of blue), 1 pink ((using two shades of pink), 1 blue and yellow (1 layer of each color)
- Gardenia: W: 7.56” and H: 9.67”
- We are going to use 5 in the following colors: 1 yellow, 1 blue, 1 orange, 1 light pink, 1 fuchsia or dark pink
3: For some of the flowers we are going to use the green parts,BUT not for all of them, if you want to avoid using the greenery, because they are not going be as much visible, you have 2 options:
A- At the moment of the cut, you just ignore the green mat in where the leaves are showing
B- You choose the flower, and then in the layers section you click on the small eye icon that is showing next to the green parts and you hide it.
After you click on the eye icon, you should see something like:
💡Tip: Remember to click on save button every time that you add a new element or do any change.
Step 2: Cut The Design
1: Before start cutting our design, we need to make sure that we are going to cut with the right cricut machine, in order to do this, we are going to click on Maker in the top Right Menu, next to Make Green button and in there, we are going to chose our machine, in our case we are using a Cricut Maker:
2: We are ready to start cutting, so you are going to click on the MAKE green button.
3: We are going to click on Continue, and in there we are going to browse for the material that we are going to physically cut, in our case all our different elements are based on cardstock and we are going to use the following configuration for all of them:
4: We are going to use for all the different cuts, our green mat, when we have our different materials on the mats, we are going to upload them to the machine and
we are going to click on the Cut button and the machine is going to start cutting and you are going to be able to see the progress of the cut on your device screen.
💡Tip: You can use scraps for some of your flowers, also at this point you can change the colors of the actual cardstock sheet that you are going to use.
Step 3: Weeding
💡Tip: You are going to be doing the Weeding between your cuts so you can continue use your mat for the next cut, for this type of projects we recommend at least have 2 mats.
1: After our elements are already cut, we can start the weeding. Managing cardstock in the green mat could be a little complicated if you do not handle the cardstock gently.
Make sure to wave your mat a little bit and then bend / fold you mat in order for the cardstock to unglue from the mat, and then proceed with the same process with the different elements:
💡Tip: You can use the scrapper to gently pull the cardstock out of the mat. Also before removing the flowers, make sure that all the petals and not sticked to the mat.
2: We are going to apply the same process to all our elements: flowers, bow, vase, leaves, etc.
Step 4.1: Assemble the Vase
1: We are going to start with our base, first we are going to grab our 2 circles and we are going to fold all the dents inside each circle, you can use the scrapper or a rule to help you with this:
2: Now we are going to grab our vase interior and the bottom and top of the base and we are going to start gluing each dent into the interior of the vase.
After you glue all the dents, you should have something like this:
💡Tip: We recommend to do the bottom and the top at the same time.
3: Now we are going to grab our vase exterior, and we are going to glue the bottom of the exterior with the bottom of the cylinder that we just created:
After gluing all the bottom, you should have something like this at the top of the base:
BEFORE gluing the top, you are going to place your hand over the top and push down a little bit, you are going to see that the different cuts generate like a bend and you can notice the interior of the base:
We need to glue to obtain that effect, so you are going to apply glue and then push the exterior and hold it for a couple of seconds, until the glue is dry. You should have something like:
4: We are going to now assemble the bow, you are going to bend each side of the bow, and then apply glue to each side and glue it in the middle:
5: You are going to round the middle with the small rectangle and glue it on the back and add the 2 small ribbon pieces also glued on the back
6: You are going to gran the longest rectangle and you are going to glue it over the top of the base and also glue your bow into it:
Your vase should be something like this:
7: Using hot glue, we are going to glue our hemisphere on the top of the vase:
Step 4.2: Assemble the Flowers
At this point you should have already all your elements cut and ready or at least one of each flower.
Before assembling any of the flowers, we like to add something extra to the flowers and leaves so they look more realistic, in this case we are going to use some Ink on the borders of the petals.
After the embellishment is done, you can proceed with the flower assembly:
1: We are going to start with the leaves, after we applied some ink in the borders, we are going to use our scrapper or just our finger and bend them in the middle:
2: We are going to proceed with the daisies, we apply the ink first and then using a pen, a brochette stick, a scoring pen or your fingers, we are going to start rolling them from the outside to the inside, once that you are at the end, you are going to glue the little circle at the end with the roll of the flowers and hold it for a couple of minutes, then you can use your fingers to separate the petals as you like
The final Daisy flower is 1” diameter more or less.
2: Now is the turn of the Gardenia, first you are going to glue each string together, making sure that all the small ones are together, so you are going to attach the end of one string, with the beginning of the next one and you are going to let it dry for several minutes.
After a couple of minutes, you are going to roll them starting with the small petals to the end of the string:
Once you roll all the string, you are going to grab the last 2 petals, and going to glue the at the bottom of the flower:
After that with your fingers you can accommodate the petals as you like. The final Gardenia flower is 2 – 2.5” diameter more or less.
OPTIONAL: You can add a stem to this flower, in order to do this you are going to cut the greenery that is attached to the flower in design space.
A- You are going to cut some flower wire between 3-4” long.
B- You are going to create a little hole into your greenery with the help of your wire and you are going to bend the wire in a 90 degree angle.
C- You are going to apply hot glue all over the greenery and wire and you are going to glue it to the bottom of your flower
💡Tip: Adding stems to some of your flowers is going to make your arrangement to look more realistic.
3: We are going to proceed with the Carnation, for this flower, besides any ink that you can apply to the border, we recommend to create some kind of wavy movement on each of the petals, you can create this by using some tweezers on each of the petals.
These are the Carnations just after you cut them:
And these is how the look after adding some ink and create some movement to each of the petals:
After creating the movement on the petals, we are going to roll them (the same way that we did with the Daisies) from the small petals to the biggest ones, and we are going to glue the little circle at the end of the petals with the roll petals:
Each Carnation finals dimensions are between 2-2.5” more or less:
OPTIONAL: You can add a stem to this flower, in order to do this you are going to cut the greenery that is attached to the flower in design space.
A- You are going to cut some flower wire between 3-4” long.
B- You are going to roll your greenery like a U shape to create like a cone and you are going to glue it.
C- You are going to insert the wire and create a hook inside the cone so it is not loose.
D- You are going to apply hot glue all inside the cone and on the border with the flower and you are going to glue it to the bottom of your flower
4: Our last flower is the Dahlia. After you cut it, and apply ink if you like, using the tweezers or your fingers you are going to fold / bend the petals to the inside and you are going to do this with all the different layers
Then you are going to start gluing from the biggest layer to the smallest layer, only in the middle, making sure that the petals from the different layer are al showing and not one over the other one:
Each Dahlia finals dimensions are between 2.5-3” more or less:
Also, you can play with this flower and create each layer with different colors, something like:
OPTIONAL: You can add a stem to this flower, in order to do this you are going to cut the greenery that is attached to the flower in design space.
A- You are going to cut some flower wire between 3-4” long.
B- You are going to create a little hole into your greenery with the help of your wire and you are going to bend the wire in a 90 degree angle.
C- You are going to apply hot glue all over the greenery and wire and you are going to glue it to the bottom of your flower
5: You have to repeat the steps for assembling your flowers which each one of them. Once you are done with all of them you are almost DONE!
Step 4.3: Assemble the Vase with the Flowers
1: Now it’s time to start adding your lovely flowers to the vase! We are going to use hot glue to glue them to our foam hemisphere. We recommend starting by adding the flowers one by one in the way that you like the most.
💡Tip: If your wire is too long, you can cut it to the desire measurement.
You can also start adding some leaves, in our case we glue them with hot glue on the stem of the leaves and in some cases we glue it to the back of a flower if needed.
💡Tip: Also, you can check if you need more flowers, more leaves based on your physical arrangement.
2: After all these steps!!!! YOU ARE DONE!! You have a great decor piece that you can use to enhance any place in your house or give as a gift to a loved one! Well done!
